NIGERIA: 185 Killed, 2000 Houses Razed In Borno Town As Soldiers And Boko Haram Fight
Local
government
officials, who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES, said 185 persons died, at least
2000
houses, 64 motorcycles and 40 cars were burnt in the wake of the attack.
The Borno
State
Governor, Kashim Shettima, visited the town on Sunday and was told by
residents
that soldiers were responsible for the torching of houses that led to
the death
of many.
PREMIUM
TIMES
gathered that scores of others are currently hospitalised with various
shades
of burnt injuries.
Residents
said
most casualties, especially the aged ones and children, died as a result
of the
conflagration that engulfed the entire town.
Governor
Kashim
Shettima, who visited the town on Sunday, became emotionally drenched at
the
sight of charred houses, vehicles and how homeless residents took refuge
in the
bush.
The
Commander of
the Task Force, Brigadier General Austin Edokpaye, explained that the
fire that
consumed the town and resultant deaths should be blamed on the Boko
Haram
terrorists who opened fire on soldiers while hiding in the mix of
civilians.
A local
trader in
Baga told PREMIUM TIMES that the attack started at about 8 p.m. on
Friday and
was continued the next day.
“Only God
can
understand what we have done to deserve this. But the soldiers were
mindless
that night in their approach; they killed and burnt our houses, chased
everyone
into the bush including women and children. So far we have buried 185
corpses.
– some were burnt beyond recognition; others are hospitalised with
various
degrees of burnt,” said the resident who begged to remain anonymous.
Governor
Shettima
who drove through the burnt town amidst heavy motorcade of security
personnel
condemned the incident which he said was a ‘nasty occurrence’.
At the
town’s
hospital, the governor had to commiserate with women, children and aged
men
receiving treatment for various degrees of burnt caused by the fire.
Bashir Isa,
a grocery
merchant, told PREMIUM TIMES that “everyone has been in the bush since
Friday
night; we started returning back to town because the governor came to
town
today.
“To get
food to
eat in the town now is a problem because even the markets are burnt. We
are
still picking corpses of women and children in the bush and creeks.”
Brigadier
General
Edokpaye denied allegations by residents that the shootout was
unprovoked.
“We lost an
officer during the attack on our men on patrol. We’ve received an
intelligence
that some suspected Boko Haram members usually pray and hide arms at a
particular mosque in town. It was around that mosque that our men were
attacked
with several of them injured and an officer died.
“When we
reinforced and returned to the scene, the terrorists came out with heavy
firepower including RPGs which usually has a conflagration effect,” the
army
chief said.
Governor
Shettima
pleaded with fleeing residents to return to their burnt homes as a
committee
had been empannelled to provide a palliative compensation for the loss
they
suffered.
He also
called on
the commander to “take full charge” of his operation and ensure he
personally
supervises his field officers from time to time “in order to avert such
nasty
incidences in the future.”

F.B.I. Releases Images of Two Suspects in Boston Attack
One was seen placing a dark-colored backpack outside the Forum
restaurant, the site of the second bombing, just minutes before the
explosion, said Richard DesLauriers, the special agent in charge of the
F.B.I.'s Boston field office.
“Today we are enlisting the public’s help to identify the two suspects,” Mr. DesLauriers said at a news conference on Thursday evening in Boston.
In the video, both men are carrying backpacks, and wearing baseball
caps, one a dark cap and one a white cap turned backward. They are
walking along Boylston Street.
After a concerted effort, he said, investigators determined that a second suspect had been involved.
Both men appeared to be wearing dark-colored zippered-front jackets. The
first, whom Mr. DesLauriers called Suspect 1, wore a dark-colored
baseball cap with a white emblem on it and markings on the front, a
white T-shirt and tan pants. Visible around the edges of his cap was
short dark hair. The man he identified as Suspect 2 wore a white
baseball cap backward, with dark-colored pants. He had slightly longer
curly hair. The men appeared to be wearing hooded sweatshirts beneath
the jackets.
Mr. DesLauriers did not characterize the appearance of the men or offer
an opinion as to their possible ethnicity or national origin.
Mr. DesLauriers urged anyone who has seen the men, or who knows who they are, to call 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324).

Exclusive Interview With The Starboy Wizkid
In one word, describe what the past year has been for you?
Blessing, it has been a blessing.
Where did you enjoy performing the most, the UK or US?
It was a totally different experience because in the UK, we have a lot of Nigerians living in one community, but in the US people are scattered all over, you have some people staying in New York, Minnesota, New Jersey. That’s the difference. Everywhere I went to, it was a different kind of love, because some people didn’t even think that I would come for the concert, because they felt like ‘why would Wizkid come to Minnesota or some funny place in the United States?’ It was a just a different experience for me.
How was it, working with the likes of Akon, Wale, Kardinal Offishall, The Game and Young Jeezy?
It was crazy, because I was at BET, then I was invited for a dinner. Wale has always been my friend, and [I'm also friends with] Bu, who’s Akon‘s younger brother. He came there with Young Jeezy and introduced me, and that was how I started work with him. When we recorded the first song, everybody loved it, [and] before I knew it The Game came in and heard the song and said he had to jump on it. We booked another session for the next day, then came back and recorded. Chris Brown and every other person came through, and it was a great feeling. I felt blessed.
How did you find time to record your forth-coming album while you were busy on tour?
I am a workaholic, I’m a studio rat. In London, after the concerts I went back to the studio to do my thing,. It’s the love for music that keeps me going.
What do you think is behind all this growth after your first single ‘Holla at your boy‘?
Firstly, it’s God, because everybody works hard, but it’s whom God has blessed that excels. So I just feel he is the one behind all these things happening, and also the fact that I have a solid team behind me handling my business.
What is the difference between when it was just you, Banky W, and Skales in the EME crew, to the new family now?
It was Banky and I even before Skales (Laughs). The dream at that time was to build an empire, bring some artistes, and build them on the same platform. It’s just a dream coming true, and it’s something we have always wished to do. We just made sure we built the empire, [and] I just thank God that everything is working out well. EME has always been about how good you are, not how well dressed you are.
Banky W postponed his album for the team to release the compilation; would you ever take that bullet for the team?
How was the experience recording the EME album?
It was easy. From day one it has always been about ‘what do you have now, let’s put it together and make something crazy.’ So when we were recording the album it was exciting. I’m glad we made it happen.
What does the wizkid brand stand for?
It stands for an ambitious young man who is trying fulfill his dreams. A lot of people come to me and say they want to be like me, I just feel overwhelmed by it and I’m happy and thank God.
Do you feel at the top of your career?
I am not anywhere close right now, I’m just starting. Every day when I wake up in the morning I feel like ‘what am I going to do today?’
Why did you part ways with your manager Osagie Osarenkhoe?
It was a business decision, because the brand is growing. She’s still working with a couple of other EME artistes to push their brands. She is still part of the team, we just needed more hands.
How has working with your new manager Godwin Tom been?
It’s been great.
